Before You Start
Before operating any equipment, always:
✔ Complete the pre-start inspection.
✔ Read the manufacturer's operating instructions.
✔ Inspect the equipment for damage or faults.
✔ Report any defects immediately to DIY Equipment Hire.
✔ Ensure all guards and safety devices are correctly fitted.
✔ Wear the recommended Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
✔ Ensure you are physically fit and not under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication that may impair your ability to operate machinery.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
The following PPE is recommended unless otherwise specified for the equipment being hired:
- Safety boots
- Safety glasses
- Hearing protection
- Gloves
- High-visibility clothing
- Dust mask or respirator where required
General Operating Safety
Always:
- Operate equipment only in well-ventilated areas.
- Keep all bystanders, children and pets well clear of the work area.
- Maintain a firm footing and secure grip while operating machinery.
- Know the location of all emergency stop controls before starting.
- Stop the engine before leaving equipment unattended.
- Never operate machinery when fatigued.
- Never exceed the manufacturer's recommended operating limits.
- Never modify or remove safety guards or protective covers.
Do not:
- Wear loose clothing or jewellery.
- Allow long hair to hang loose around moving parts.
- Operate equipment under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Operate equipment if you are unfamiliar with its controls.
Petrol Engine Safety
Petrol is highly flammable.
Always:
- Turn the engine off before refuelling.
- Allow the engine to cool before removing the fuel cap.
- Refuel away from sparks, flames or smoking.
- Clean up fuel spills immediately.
- Secure the fuel cap before restarting.
- Store fuel containers safely away from ignition sources.
- Avoid breathing fuel vapours.
Be aware that engine components and exhaust systems become extremely hot during operation.
Digging & Trencher Safety
Before undertaking any excavation work:

✔ Contact the relevant service locator before digging.
When operating a trencher:
- Inspect the digging chain before use.
- Never operate with damaged or missing guards.
- Keep hands and feet clear of the digging chain.
- Do not trench on slopes exceeding 15 degrees.
- Avoid rocky ground where the machine may jam or kick back.
- Lower the digging chain slowly to the required depth.
- Never disconnect hydraulic hoses while the engine is running.
- Never operate machinery with hydraulic oil leaks.
Excavation Safety

- Identify underground services.
- Assess soil conditions.
- Establish a safe work area.
- Keep bystanders away from excavations.
Where trenches exceed safe depths, appropriate excavation support systems must be used in accordance with applicable workplace safety requirements.
Worksite Risk Assessment
Before commencing work, inspect your work area for hazards including:
- Underground services
- Overhead power lines
- Uneven ground
- Slippery surfaces
- Confined spaces
- Falling objects
- Moving vehicles or machinery
- Stored hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical energy

Emergency Procedures
Immediately stop using the equipment if:
- A fault develops.
- A safety guard becomes damaged or detached.
- Hydraulic or fuel leaks are detected.
- Unusual noises or excessive vibration occur.
